There was a time when I never ever would have thought I would view this on Blu-ray let alone a Criterion edition.
If the original ‘54 movie did not exist this one version would be passable. As it stands, it’s just horrible. But I cannot give it a totally low rating since it repurposes much of Honda’s work. But just an awful unnecessary westernization of a monumental film.

Does the Criterion disc have both versions or just the American cut?

Both! Watched the original during the first week of year. Was supposed to watch this last week. Want to get to one per week leading up to the new movie.

Ah cool! I keep forgetting the new movie is coming out, though the kids are excited for it.
