Viewing Notes

Howard Hughes flick! All the dogfight sequences are incredible. Great editing between pilots and aerial action. Crazy watching it knowing how difficult it had to be to make it all work and capture it. The zeppelin sequence is really good, too.

The love triangle between the brothers and Helen (Jean Harlow) is amusing and includes a rather risque scene w/Harlow and Monte back at her apartment. Hard to believe she was only like 18 or 19 when they made this movie.

Another observation: a lot of the acting is exaggerated as though they were making a silent movie. Of course this is right on the advent of talkies so it makes sense plus for all the German sequences they use intertitles but most of the German spoken isn’t translated. Also for this restoration there a few sequences in color, which was odd to see but they looked good, esp. the ballroom dance.

I’d love to watch a documentary on the making of this movie just for the aerial combat shoot.

I’m looking forward to watching this soon. I’ve seen clips from it but never the entire film!

It’s really good! All the aerial sequences are amazing. It’s crazy how much Hughes put into this movie but it shows.
