Overview

DKUTV had another event to celebrate the life of Yuriko Hoshi on her birthday (Dec 6). Sadly she passed away in 2018. The movie line-up was the same as the previous two years and only two of the movies I still haven’t seen but I own them so I keep putting them off. I revisited most of the other films sans the Godzilla movies last year but this is the only one that I didn’t want to miss this year b/c it’s so damn entertaining.

Firstly, as I’ve noted before, this is the best role I’ve seen Yuriko do; she’s a strong badass leader in this rural tribe yet shows vulnerability. She’s just so amazing that this film should get a restoration and release based on her alone. That said, I really love Yuzo Kayama as the secret samurai pretending to be just a commoner within the tribe. He has that cool calm demeanor that works for this character. Makoto Sato is perfect as the hustler playing both sides, the tribe and the pirates.

Goes without saying to highlight the beauty of Kumi Mizuno but goddamn is she just radiant here. The showdown between her and Hoshi one of those great cinematic moments. I really need to track down a copy of this. This would be a fun movie night flick.
